Busan Plastic Surgery: Seomyeon, Haeundae and Nampo-dong Clinics and Patient Numbers

When most people think about plastic surgery in Korea, Seoul’s Gangnam district comes to mind first, and the clinic counts back that up: a 2020 trade-press tally put about three-quarters of Seoul’s plastic surgery clinics in Gangnam-gu. Busan, Korea’s second-largest city, has a much smaller plastic surgery sector, and some international patients now ask whether it is a practical alternative. This article sets out what can be checked (patient numbers, where the clinics are) and what cannot, including price and quality comparisons.

That comparison is worth making with actual data rather than reputation. Our Gangnam clinic list and the Busan lists below were built the same way, from the same Naver Place source, so the clinic counts, review volumes, and listed specialist numbers can be read side by side.

Why Busan Is Gaining International Attention

Busan is Korea’s second-largest city by population, a coastal metropolis of about 3.23 million people built around a natural harbor on the country’s southeastern tip. That number is worth stating precisely, because it is falling: Busan’s population peaked at about 3.89 million in 1995, slipped below 3.4 million in 2020, and stood at 3,229,467 in August 2026 on the Interior Ministry’s resident-registration count. It’s known internationally for its beaches, its film festival, and its food. What’s less known outside Korea is that Busan has a well-developed private medical sector that has been serving domestic patients for decades.

As medical tourism to Korea grew through the 2010s and into the 2020s, Busan’s clinics began adapting to international demand. English-speaking coordinators became more common. Consultation processes were streamlined for foreign patients. Clinics began marketing directly to overseas audiences in a way they hadn’t done before.

That shift is now measurable, and the numbers are steep. Busan recorded 12,912 foreign patients in 2023, 30,165 in 2024, and 75,879 in 2025. That is a rise of about 151% in a single year, enough to make Busan the second-largest destination for foreign patients in Korea after Seoul and the largest outside the Seoul capital area.

Two caveats keep that in proportion, and both matter if you are reading this as a plastic surgery story. First, most of the growth isn’t plastic surgery: dermatology accounted for roughly two-thirds of Busan’s foreign patients in 2025, while plastic surgery was about 6.5%. Second, Seoul still took 87.2% of the 2.01 million foreign patients Korea treated that year. Busan is growing quickly from a small base; it is not displacing Seoul, and any article that implies otherwise is overselling it.

For plastic surgery specifically, then, Busan remains a secondary market: 6.5% of 75,879 works out to roughly 5,000 foreign plastic surgery patients in 2025.

What Procedures Are Available in Busan?

Busan clinics advertise the same main procedure groups you see in Seoul. In our Naver Place records for the city, clinic tags cover eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, facelifts and lifting, liposuction and breast surgery. Tags show what a clinic promotes; they say nothing about how well an individual surgeon performs it.

Those clinics are concentrated in a few areas. Seomyeon is Busan’s main commercial hub and holds the densest cluster, while Haeundae covers the coastal Centum City side. Each list below shows the procedures those clinics actually promote in Korean.

We have no outcome data that would show Busan clinics doing any procedure better or worse than clinics in Seoul, and we are not aware of any published comparison. Judge the surgeon, not the city.

Skin and non-surgical treatments are widely offered too; dermatology accounted for most of Busan’s foreign-patient growth in 2025. If you are thinking of adding a laser or injectable treatment during a recovery stay, ask your surgeon first whether it is safe that soon after surgery.

What Is Known About Cost

Cost is one of the most common reasons patients look outside Seoul, and the structural argument for it is real: Korea’s plastic surgery clinics are heavily concentrated in Gangnam, where commercial rents are among the highest in the country, while Busan clinics operate on lower overheads. As of 2020, of roughly 1,008 plastic surgery clinics nationwide, 530 were in Seoul (about three-quarters of those in Gangnam-gu alone) against 92 in Busan.

What we can’t do is give you a percentage. Korea publishes no official regional price comparison for cosmetic surgery: aesthetic procedures are excluded from the national non-covered price disclosure system, which covers things like MRI scans and treatment materials but not rhinoplasty or double eyelid surgery. Clinics are legally required to post their own non-covered prices and may not charge above the posted amount, so prices are public clinic by clinic, but no aggregated Busan-versus-Seoul figure exists, and anyone quoting one is estimating. Compare written quotes from specific clinics instead, and do not read a lower quote as evidence of either lower or equal quality.

Lower overheads may translate into lower quotes in Busan, but no published data confirms how large that gap is, or that it exists for a given procedure. Budget from the written quotes you receive, not from a city-level assumption.

The Busan Experience Beyond the Clinic

One argument made for Busan is the recovery environment. Seoul is a dense, fast-moving city, and some patients would rather not spend two weeks of recovery in the middle of it.

Busan has a different pace, with beach districts such as Haeundae and Gwangalli and hillside neighbourhoods such as Gamcheon Culture Village. How much walking you can do, and what you can eat, including whether raw seafood is allowed, are questions for your surgeon’s aftercare instructions rather than for a travel guide.

Whether that actually makes recovery better is a matter of preference, not evidence. No published survey compares patient recovery experience between Korean cities, and we’re not going to invent one: Korea’s national foreign-patient satisfaction survey reports results nationally, not by region. What can be said plainly is that Busan’s beach districts are quieter and easier to navigate than central Seoul, and some patients would rather spend a swollen week somewhere that doesn’t feel like a clinical district.

Choosing the Right Clinic

As with any plastic surgery decision, choosing the right clinic matters far more than choosing the right city. Busan, like Seoul, has clinics of varying standards, and the city name tells you nothing about an individual surgeon. The same due diligence applies here as anywhere.

Busan does give international patients a few official footholds here. The city runs its own medical tourism portal, Medi&Tour Busan, in English and more than a dozen other languages, with a searchable directory of medical institutions by specialty, interpreter dispatch, and a physical information center. Four institutions in Busan also hold KAHF accreditation (the government-backed certification specifically for hospitals serving foreign patients, which only nationally-accredited institutions may apply for), and one of those four is a plastic surgery clinic. Neither of those is a quality guarantee for any individual surgeon, but both are checkable, which is more than most marketing offers.

Verify your surgeon’s board certification and specialization. Review before-and-after portfolios specific to the procedure you’re considering. Confirm that your consultation will be conducted in a language you’re fully comfortable in, not a rushed translation through a coordinator. Ask detailed questions about what aftercare is included and what happens if you experience complications after returning home.

In short, run the same checks you would in Seoul: whether the clinic is registered to attract foreign patients if it is marketing to you, the operating surgeon’s board certification, a written quote that lists what is included, and a named contact for complications after you fly home.

Busan Clinic Lists by District

If you are weighing Busan seriously, these are the dated records behind the argument above: what Naver Place returned for each district, with paid ad placements excluded and every clinic linked to Google and Apple Maps so you can verify the location yourself.

All three records come from Korean-language Naver Place searches made on 16 September 2026. Each entry shows Naver’s position, then location, review counts (visit / blog), the specialists Naver lists, and the clinic’s own tags. Missing data is marked as missing, and a dash means Naver showed nothing.

None of these clinics pays us. Several of them pay Naver for ads, but no clinic on this page paid us to be included, for its place in the order or for patients who get in touch with it, and we do not make bookings or forward enquiries to any of them. Our Commercial Disclosure sets this out in full.

Seomyeon, the district around Seomyeon Station in Busanjin-gu, is one of Busan’s main clinic areas, and its search carried more advertising than either of the other Busan searches we recorded. Sixteen paid placements came out of this September 16, 2026 search before anything else could be recorded. What remained were seven organic listings, every one of them in Bujeon-dong, Busanjin-gu and every one carrying “Busan Seomyeon Station” in its name, so on the map they are a single walkable cluster.

Balance Plastic Surgery Busan Seomyeon Station also ran a paid placement in the same search, which makes sixteen ad slots in all. We removed the ad but kept its organic position, which it earned separately. One more clinic in the organic results, at position 4, was listed under dermatology and was left out because this record covers plastic surgery only, so the numbering below goes from 3 to 5.

In a search this crowded with advertising, visibility is easy to mistake for merit. Balance Plastic Surgery’s 2,638 visit and 7,021 blog reviews tell you how visible it is, not how its patients fared. The specialist line, including the dermatologist listed at Haneul, is reproduced from Naver, and one tag naming a prescription-only weight-loss drug was left out of Balance’s list.

This Haeundae search returned clinics around Centum City in U-dong, on the eastern side of Busan, rather than around Seomyeon. All seven organic listings from this September 16, 2026 search are in U-dong, Haeundae-gu. What sets the record apart is how many of them also paid for visibility: four of the seven ran ads in the same search. We removed those ad slots, kept the organic positions, and added a column so you can see which is which.

Nampo-dong is Busan’s old downtown, and for plastic surgery it is a genuinely thin market. Naver Place returned just three non-ad clinics on September 16, 2026, each with very low review volumes. We have not padded the list with neighbouring areas or ads to make it look fuller. Seomyeon is about a quarter of an hour north on subway Line 1, and Haeundae is a longer trip with a change to Line 2 at Seomyeon; both returned considerably more clinics.

What came back

Each line repeats exactly what Naver displayed: the position it gave the clinic, the address down to the ga, visit and blog review counts, any specialists Naver lists, and the tags each clinic uses for itself. Two of the three show no tags at all and two list no specialists. We have left those gaps as gaps rather than filling them from other sources, and each entry links to Google Maps and Apple Maps so you can confirm the location yourself.

Is a single-digit review count a warning sign?

Not by itself. Review counts measure volume, not quality, and blog reviews elsewhere can be sponsored. Naver’s order comes from its own algorithm (reviews, activity, relevance and unpublished factors), so position 1 is not a verdict either. What low counts do mean is that there is very little public signal to go on, which makes the official checks below more important, not less. Venus Clinic, at position 1, shows 9 visit and 4 blog reviews; Sunmi Clinic shows 1 and 3. Choi Sang-ho Plastic Surgery is the only one of the three with a specialist listed on Naver, and even that figure has not been checked by us against the national register.

Why Nampo-dong returns so few clinics

Busan as a whole has a much smaller plastic surgery sector than Seoul. A 2020 tally in the Korean medical newspaper Docdocdoc (청년의사) counted 92 plastic surgery clinics in Busan, about 9 percent of the 1,008 in the country. Nampo-dong, the older commercial centre of Jung-gu around Jagalchi and Gukje markets, is a shopping and market district first, and on 16 September 2026 its search produced three clinics with twelve visit reviews between them.

Our same-day Busan searches point elsewhere for volume. The Seomyeon search returned seven organic clinics behind sixteen paid placements, and the Haeundae search seven organic listings around Centum City with nine ad slots removed. Nampo-dong had a single ad. Advertising is no measure of quality, but it does show where Busan clinics compete hardest for patients, and in September 2026 that was Seomyeon.

Getting to Nampo-dong

Nampo Station (station 111) is on Busan Metro Line 1, between Jagalchi and Jungang. Busan Station, where KTX trains from Seoul arrive, is two stops north on the same line, about four minutes away; the quickest KTX services from Seoul Station take around 2 hours 15 minutes. Seomyeon is eight stops north on Line 1, so a consultation there and a stay in Nampo-dong combine easily.

From Gimhae International Airport, take the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang (about nine minutes), change to Line 2 for Seomyeon, then ride Line 1 south to Nampo. Route planners estimate a little over 40 minutes in total, excluding waits, and a transit card handles the transfers between lines.

Staying in Nampo-dong while you recover

Nampo-dong is crowded with market and shopping traffic, so treat rest here the way you would in any busy centre: ask for a quiet room off the main streets and keep the walk to the station short. If your surgery is in Seomyeon but you stay here, every check-up means a Line 1 ride of roughly a quarter of an hour each way. Find out from the clinic, in writing, how many follow-up visits it expects before you book accommodation or a flight home.

The government’s two Medical Korea walk-in information centres are at Seoul Station and Incheon Airport Terminal 1, but the Medical Korea phone line, +82-2-1577-7129, works from Busan too; it answers from 9 am to 6 pm Korean time daily and helps with medical institution information and complaints. The 1330 Travel Helpline, run by the Korea Tourism Organization, answers around the clock in eight languages, among them English, Japanese and Chinese, and can pass calls on to 119 emergency services.

To see the raw results, search “남포동 성형외과” at m.map.naver.com.

How to read the Busan lists

  • Order: Naver’s order comes from its own algorithm, built on review volume, activity, relevance and things it does not disclose. Position 1 is not a verdict over any later position.
  • Reviews: counts measure volume and visibility, not quality, and blog reviews can be sponsored.
  • Specialists: reproduced as Naver lists them, including doctors from other fields such as the dermatologist at Haneul in Seomyeon, and not checked by us against the national register.
  • Tags: the clinics’ own promotion, translated, not a verified specialty. Where a tag named a prescription-only drug, we left it out and say so.
  • Dates: each list is a snapshot of 16 September 2026.

Re-running any of these searches will probably give a different list, because Naver reorders continuously and mixes in paid placements, which we remove. Where a clinic bought an ad and also ranked organically, as Balance did in Seomyeon and four clinics did in Haeundae, we removed the ad slot and kept the organic position it earned separately. Naver Place is a commercial directory, not a registry, and carries no licensing signal.

These pages are records, not rankings or referrals, and we do not publish “best” lists; our Editorial Policy and Research Methodology explain the approach.

Three dated Busan searches, ads removed

  • Naver’s ranking produced the order, not our assessment.
  • Paid placements were removed before publishing: sixteen in Seomyeon, nine in Haeundae, one in Nampo-dong.
  • Review totals reflect visibility, and blog reviews may be sponsored.
  • Specialist counts are copied from Naver without register checks.

We do not rank clinics, refer patients or accept money from any clinic listed here. Check registration and certification yourself with How to Verify a Korean Plastic Surgery Clinic Yourself.

Checking a Busan clinic yourself

Before you book anything, the checks worth running are official, mostly free, and several of them work in English.

For licensing, the government’s registered institution list shows in English whether a clinic is registered to attract foreign patients. Article 6 of the Act on Support for Overseas Expansion of Medical System and Attraction of Foreign Patients requires that registration, with malpractice cover of at least 100 million won, before a clinic markets to or recruits patients from abroad. A clinic missing from the list can still lawfully treat a foreign visitor who walks in; what it may not do is recruit foreign patients. For the surgeon, the Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons’ English specialist search confirms board certification for its members; membership is voluntary, so a name that does not appear proves nothing either way. It is worth running, since any licensed Korean physician may legally perform cosmetic procedures without plastic surgery board certification, and since the specialist counts above are Naver’s and unchecked against the national register. The full routine, with KAHF accreditation, the legally binding posted price list and the limits of verification, is in How to Verify a Korean Plastic Surgery Clinic Yourself.

If you contact one of these clinics, ask which doctor would operate and check that name specifically, since a clinic-level listing says nothing about the individual surgeon.

Busan clinic lists: common questions

If a clinic ran an ad, why is it still listed?

Because it also appeared organically. The ad slot is removed; the organic position, earned separately, stays. Our Research Methodology describes how we separate the two.

Why does We Are The Plastic Surgery look so different?

Its position is Naver’s, and its own tags point to sebaceous and epidermal cysts, lipoma, wound closure and keloid treatment rather than the cosmetic procedures the other six promote. Tags are the clinic’s marketing, so read them as a description of what it advertises, not as a verified specialty.

Is Nampo-dong worth considering for plastic surgery in Busan?

Only if one of these three clinics suits you once you have checked it. With three organic listings and single-digit review counts on 16 September 2026, there is very little public information to compare, while Seomyeon, eight Line 1 stops away, returned more clinics.

How do I get from Gimhae Airport to Nampo-dong by public transport?

Light rail to Sasang, Line 2 to Seomyeon, then Line 1 to Nampo Station. Allow a little over 40 minutes of travel plus time for the two transfers.

Why was one clinic excluded as an ad?

미소안의원 appeared in this search only as a paid placement, never as an organic result, so it falls outside the record. That describes how it appeared on Naver that day and is not a judgment on the clinic.

Where can I check a Nampo-dong clinic independently?

Use the official registers described above, starting with the Medical Korea registered institution list. How to Verify a Korean Plastic Surgery Clinic Yourself explains the remaining checks, including the plastic surgery specialist search and posted price lists.

For the wider context on why Korea became a plastic surgery destination in the first place, and what that means for pricing and surgeon volume, see our overview of why patients travel to Korea for surgery.

Sources & Verification Notes

Figures above are summarised from the sources below rather than quoted from them. Where a claim commonly made about Busan could not be verified, we say so instead of repeating it.

  • Population: resident-registration population statistics, Ministry of the Interior and Safety (3,229,467 as of August 2026). The 1995 peak of about 3.89 million is from the Encyclopedia of Busan History and Culture. Note this series counts Korean nationals only; Busan’s own registered-population series, which includes registered foreign residents, runs slightly higher.
  • Foreign patient numbers: 2025 national statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (2.01 million foreign patients nationally; Seoul 87.2%), with Busan’s own figure of 75,879 published by Busan Metropolitan City. Specialty breakdown and regional detail from the Korea Health Industry Development Institute.
  • Why we give no price percentage: cosmetic surgery is excluded from Korea’s national non-covered price disclosure system, so no official Busan-versus-Seoul comparison exists. Clinics must post their own non-covered prices under Article 45 of the Medical Service Act.
  • Clinic distribution: the 2020 nationwide count of plastic surgery clinics by region, which is the basis for the Gangnam concentration point, comes from Korean medical trade press reporting rather than a current government release, so treat it as indicative of the pattern, not as a 2026 figure.
  • District clinic lists: Naver Place searches for “서면 성형외과”, “해운대 성형외과” and “남포동 성형외과” on 16 September 2026, with paid placements removed; the 2020 Busan clinic count cited in the Nampo-dong section is from the Korean medical newspaper Docdocdoc (청년의사).
  • Medical tourism infrastructure: Medi&Tour Busan (Busan Metropolitan City) and the KAHF accredited-institution list.
  • Not verified: we found no survey comparing patient recovery experience between Korean cities, and no verifiable regional price differential for cosmetic procedures. Earlier versions of this article stated a specific percentage; it has been removed because we could not source it.

A note on scope: this overview is our own reading of Busan as a plastic surgery destination, written at the date above. It is not a directory of every Busan clinic, it deliberately leaves out prices because they move too fast to keep current, and it is no replacement for a consultation with the surgeon you are considering.

The district lists are general information for readers researching plastic surgery in Seomyeon, Haeundae and Nampo-dong: not medical advice, not a recommendation, not a full clinic census and not a price list. Confirm doctors, prices, inclusions and interpretation with the clinic before booking. They reflect the Naver Place searches made on 16 September 2026, and a clinic can open, close or change hours with little notice. See our Medical Disclaimer and Price Research Methodology.
